Memorial Day is filled with many different activities and actions throughout the country. It is a day to celebrate and appreciate time with friends, family and other significant people in our lives.
But in between the busy-ness of barbecues, trips to the beach and the next round, please remember to join together at 3pm local time, wherever you are, for a moment of silence to honor those who have paid the ultimate price through service to their country as well as their families.
It is a small gesture but a powerful intention. It sends a message of unity and appreciation to the thousands who choose military life and must leave families and loved ones…a small token compared to the missed birthdays, graduations, dance recitals, football practices and other family moments they are absent for on our behalf.
This year, I am choosing to take part in two different moments of silence…one at 9:01am PST / 12:01 pm EST for a special event put on by the Araq & Afghanistan Veterans of American honoring the more than 6,400 soldiers killed since 9/11 in those regions and a second at 3pm PST for the traditional Memorial Day time of remembering.
Taking this time demonstrates gratitude that will be amplified by others who also take the time to stop, put down the cell phone, shut off the distractions and focus to give thanks and show our support for those who do what most of us can or will not…protect this country and our freedoms. This is not a political act but one of humanity…simply showing I care, respect and am grateful.
