Others of you have completed treatment and, thankfully, come out the other side. Now you are wondering “what’s next after cancer?” and looking for a way to live the “new normal.”
Life after cancer and facing the “new normal” may mean you feel some of these emotional side-effects of cancer:
- limited, blocked or even paralyzed by your diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one
- unsure of how to find the energy to be engaged in life
- feeling broken
- fear of the unknown
- supported with a great treatment plan but uncertain how to create a plan for your life that integrates the changes chronic illness generates
- scared about your future and the impact chronic illness diagnosis will have on you and your loved ones
- a desire to be in charge instead of feeling victimized
“You have cancer” ~ Now what?…
No one wants or expects to receive the news that they are facing a cancer diagnosis. When it comes, the news can momentarily paralyze you. Time stands still. Your heart races.
A million questions zoom through your head yet the mask of calm you’ve quickly drawn over your face would never reveal what you’re feeling inside…a deep sense of fear. Or, it is simply too much and you experience the feeling of being emotionally overwhelmed.
In the days, weeks and months post-diagnosis, there is a process you go through. Your medical team develops and carries out a strategy for determining the status of your illness and one or more treatment options.
There are many experts in the field of cancer. They will present specific tools and resources for understanding and managing the diagnosis, treatment and beyond.
Dealing with cancer doesn’t have to be a train wreck!
My approach to coaching clients dealing with chronic illness is to view it like a set of train tracks. There are two rails. The medical plan and diagnosis makes up one track. It takes time, energy and resources to manage this aspect.
The second track is the track called your life. In addition to track one, you need to understand how to manage and have a life as the medical treatment unfolds. Living with cancer does not come with a manual.
In the early days of my late husband’s diagnosis, coping with cancer was all we could think about. We were naturally consumed by the process of researching cancer care programs, treatment options and trying to anticipate how Hodgkin’s was going to impact our lives. But once we had track one handled and a plan in place, we did a relatively good job of giving some attention to daily living but we could have used more tools and support.
There are issues, concerns, feelings and aspects of grieving to be done that come along with a diagnosis. One of our greatest fears is that of the unknown. Chronic illness tends to open the door to what initially can feel like a vast, unending void. But no matter what you are facing, you have a right to living a balanced life that has meaning and purpose.
Will you survive or will you thrive?
Often we go into survival mode when life challenges us. By taking the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) Assessment we can ascertain as to whether you will go through this challenge white knuckling it or if you can integrate the tools and resources of coaching so you are empowered and able to thrive in spite of the circumstances.
Coaching is a part of survivorship care as you learn to manage a life in the face of a cancer or other chronic illness diagnosis. The Energy Leadership Index can help you:
- see where you can optimize your physical energy levels
- uncover your secret energy stash
- discover ways to take action in reducing stress caused by worry, anxiety or fear
- assess 7 key areas of your life where you can flourish instead of just surviving
- realistically evaluate your resources and ensure you are investing them wisely in living a life, not just treating an illness
Each person’s journey through cancer is unique. There is also common, shared ground. Consider me your reluctant expert…and let me help you navigate your path to healing in a way that maximizes your human potential. Together we reduce the collateral damage of feeling hopeless and broken after cancer and transform that into self empowerment, so you can live through and beyond the experience without losing so much precious time to fear, worry, stress and low energy.
